This Ph.D. thesis makes a lexicographical proposal of a monolingual dictionary for the breakthrough level (A1) of the Spanish as a foreign language (SFL. This dictionary is organized onomasiologically, that is, by topics, not alphabetically. The lexical selection of the vocabulary comprising the nomenclature has been developed through lexical availability of preschool Spanish students speakers of all varieties of Spanish from Spain. The main features of the Thematic Monolingual Dictionary for A1 level are: The macrostructure is organized around 21 semantic fields that reflect the lexical needs of the adult learner of the A1 level in SFL and the information of the microstructure is composed of a representative image of every lexical unit's meaning in the dictionary and the oral representation of that lexical unit's significant.
