Abstract

According to the WHO, the prevalence of childhood obesity has experienced a worrying increase globally. Chile is among the countries with the highest prevalence of childhood obesity. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a valid method to increase physical activity levels in adults. The objective of this doctoral thesis is to determine the effects that a HIIT program has in PE classes at different educational levels in Chilean schoolchildren, on cardiometabolic variables, which affect the comprehensive health of schoolchildren who suffer from childhood obesity. In conclusion, long-term HIIT has a positive impact on the reduction of overweight and obesity in Chilean schoolchildren, producing improvements in cardiorespiratory capacity and reducing the percentage of body fat. HIIT is an effective method to improve the health and fitness of children, especially those who are overweight and obese.
