Abstract

Olive leaves that are generated in the cleaning stage of olives performed in olive mills (olive mill leaves), is an abundant lignocellulosic residue with potential for use in biorefinery. In this work, as a first stage, the extraction of this waste with water in an autoclave has been investigated through experimental design and surface response methodology. Temperature, time and solid loading were used as operating variables (factors), in the range 100-130 ºC, 30-90 minutes and 5-15%, respectively. The results showed that temperature and time were factors with positive influence on the responses of dissolved extracts, sugars and phenols, while solid loading had a negative influence. For the antioxidant capacity, all the factors had a negative influence, except for the time that presented a slightly positive influence. The obtained models showed interaction between the factors. The optimization of the models indicated that the most favorable conditions to maximize extracts (35.74%), sugars (16.66%) and phenols (3.99%) were 130 ºC, 90 minutes and 5%. In contrast, the highest antioxidant capacity (IC50 = 2.39 g/L, DPPH = 230.07 mg Trolox/g extract) was obtained at 100 ° C.
