Résumé

In order to explain the nature of the European Union (EU), various theoretical frameworks have been developed, of which those of mainly political kind will be only taken into account. From federalism to multilevel governance, fundamentally the discussion has revolved around the intergovernmentalism-supranationalism debate. The purpose of this article is to describe the basic premises of great theoretical currents – marking fundamental instances in the development of European integration process – in order to determine which turn out to be more appropriate for the analysis of sub-state governments performance in the process of European integration.
