Abstract

The depositional style of two tufa systems (106 ka BP, MIS-5) developed in a fluvial valley in Frailes (Jaén, central sector of the Betic Cordillera, Spain) is closely related to the geomorphological setting and the position of a spring, hanging at a height of 30 m in one of the adjacent slopes. One of the tufa systems (transverse system), classified as a perched spring tufa-cascade, prograded perpendicularly to the fluvial valley, narrowing it and obstructing the drainage of the axial system which evolved from a braided fluvial system to a barrage tufa system, characterized by ponded areas with stromatolitic bioherms.
