Doctor by the Universidad de Granada with the thesis La cuenca subbética mesozóica en el sector oriental de las Cordilleras Béticas 1996. Supervised by Dr. Pedro Alejandro Ruiz Ortiz, Dr. José Miguel Molina Cámara.

The researching career firstly was centered in regional studies about the Jurassic and Cretaceous stratigraphy in the Subbetic, as the MsC as the PhD Thesis. In the MsC thesis, analyzing the saline tectonic of the Triassic rocks and their influence in the Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentation. In the PhD Thesis deal also the Jurassic and Cretaceous stratigraphic sections of the eastern sector of the Subbetic: litho- and bio-stratigraphic architecture, sedimentary processes, tectonic control in sedimentation, elemental geochemistry of oxide crusts, sequence stratigraphy, sea-level changes and palaeogeographic evolution. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of Hettangian-Aalenian rocks, where is recorded the break-up and drowning of the Lowermost Jurassic carbonate platform is dealt in Ruiz-Ortiz et al. (2004; Basin Research, 16: 235 - 257) and Bosence et al. (2009; Journal of Sedimentary Research. 79, 389-415). The Sr Isotope Stratigraphy (SIS), C, and O isotope analysis were performed in the Pliensbachian condensed levels (Nieto et al., 2008). The study of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) in the La Cerradura section (Betic External Zones) was analyzed in Reolid et al. (2014). A geochemistry, ichnology and nanofossils analysis is performed. The state of the art about the T-OAE in the Subbetic is recorded in Reolid et al. (2018; SpringerBriefs in Earth Sciences, 122 p. ISBN: 978-3-319-67210-6. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-67211-3). Recently, the research activity is centred in the study of others rocks recording different OAEs in the Southiberian Palaeomargin: the Valanginian Weissert Episode (Aguado et al., 2018) and lower Aptian OAE-1a from the Cau section (Prebetic of Alicante; Castro et al., 2021; Martínez Rodríguez et al., 2025). It is shown a high-resolution C and O isotopes curves for early Aptian, where the OAE-1a is well recorded. It has been concluded that the curve obtained from the Cau drill shows the most complete record of all those which it was correlated and the negative excursion that marks the beginning of the OAE-1a can be clearly observed. The mechanism of disintegration of carbonate platforms has been analysed from both Prebetic (Nieto et al., 2022; Martínez-Rodríguez et al., 2023, 2025), Subbetic (Nieto et al., 2023; 2024) and Palermo mountains outcrops (Basilone et al., 2024). In addition, the influence of volcanism on the development of OAE has been studied (Martínez-Rodríguez et al., 2021). Recently, based on Aptian cyclo-stratigraphic studies, Martínez-Rodríguez et al. (2024) present an astronomical timescale for this time, from the Ap2a to Ap14 carbon-isotope stages, period focusing on the Selli Event.
