Resumo
This paper studies the selection and causality mechanisms established in relation to major family events (the beginning and end of a union and the birth of a child) and self-perceived health in the Spanish population for individuals between the ages of 20 and 54 years. Spanish sample data are used from the European Union Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) for the 2004-2009 period, on the basis of which logit multivariate models for panel data were applied, controlling for age, activity status, educational level, living with children and initial health (only in causality models). The results show signs of both selection and causality effects between family events and health with differences between men and women. For men, a significant influence of selection by health was observed: men with poor health have a higher likelihood of ending a union and a lower probability of having a child. On the contrary, among Spanish women, greater influence of the causality mechanism was observed. Thus, women's health is negatively affected by the termination of a union and positively affected by the birth of a child. These differences between men and women are attributable to the gender roles described and discussed in the study.
