Abstract

This article provides new Information about the influence of Ariosto on the Castilian literature. It shows that Orlando ftirioso was one of the main sources used by Pedro de la Sierra in his Segunda parte de Espejo de principes y caballeros. Though M. Chevalier had already pointed out that Sierra imitated some episodes of the Italian poem, the present article indicates many other passages of the Spanish book inspired by Ariosto, a fact that had remained as yet unnoticed. On the other hand, this study also analyses how Sierra took several images froai Orlando Jurioso, but did not follow theses descriptions word for word. The article concludes that Sierra did not only imítate the text itself, but also the author, Ludovico Ariosto, considered to be a model writer, so that Sierra emulated even the way the Italian writer practised the imitatio.
