Abstract

The following PhD Thesis compiles four academic publications –«Return… Where to?: rootless characters in the plays of Roberto Cossa», «The scattered fragments of el Saludador in the dramaturgy of Roberto Cossa», «Food as bloody ritual in Roberto Cossa’s dramaturgy » and «Mythical consciousness and national identity in Roberto Cossa’s El viejo criado (1980)»– each focusing on a different perspective of what I have named Costa’s theatre major veins (Ordaz, 1980). Such veins, obsessions scattered throughout the playwright’s work from its very beginnings to the 60s, can be summed up in three: the role of the middle class in the history of Argentina, the fundamental importance of memory and a critical approach to Socialist utopia. This research presents, along with the aforementioned publications, an analysis of such obsessions, a biography of the playwright, a catalogue of his works and a classification of the dramaturgic poetics of the different periods in his work.
