Abstract

In this study, we developed and validated a method using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS), for an indirect analysis of diet quality of mediterranean deer from feces samples. We studied acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), lignin, C:N ratio, enzymatic digestibility of organic matter (EDOM), cell wall digestibility (CWD), cellulose, hemicellulose, sugar and botanical composition of diet. The material used in this study consisted of rumen content and feces, which were collected from red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) and fallow deer (Dama dama) in a selective hunt in Sierra Morena, Jaén. This study combines conventional chemical procedures with NIRS procedures, which need complex mathematical and statistical analysis. Reliable predictive equations were obtained for quality of diet indicators.
