Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted global mental health, including University Medicine students and the general population. This study examines depression and anxiety risk factors among Spanish medicine students and the general population during two pandemic waves. Surveys were given to 472 healthcare students. Results confirm the influence of protective factors on depression and anxiety, showing significant correlations between resilience and variables like self-efficacy, optimism, emotional intelligence, and resilience. Conversely, depression and anxiety have an inverse relationship with resilience. Understanding these factors can aid educators and policymakers in implementing interventions to support student mental well-being. The study also investigates the general Spanish population's psychological variables during the pandemic. Results show sociodemographic risk factors (sex, living with COVID-19 patients) and protective factors (self-efficacy, hope) influence mental health outcomes, especially for those in essential services. The findings contribute to understanding mental health during the pandemic and inform interventions for students and the general population.
