Abstract

This doctoral thesis delves into the investigation of the historical phonetics and phonology of Spanish during the Habsburg monarchy in Spain. This historical era marks a crucial period in the development and linguistic evolution of the Spanish language, where significant changes occurred in both pronunciation and phonological structure. The primary objective of this research is to analyze and understand the phonetic and phonological changes that took place in 16th and 17thcentury Spanish, as well as examine the linguistic, social, and cultural factors that influenced these changes. To achieve this objective, exhaustive research of a wide range of primary sources was carried out, including poetic literary texts, historiographical documents, pronunciation manuals, and linguistic treatises of the time. The phonetic and phonological analysis focuses on the evolution of the consonant and vowel sounds of Golden Age Spanish, from which the sound changes that reshaped the pronunciation patterns and phonological structures of Spanish during this period are identified. In addition to linguistic aspects, the dialectal and regional variations that characterized the speech of the Iberian Peninsula during this period were examined, and special attention was paid to the sociohistorical factors that impacted the evolution of Spanish during the 16th and 17th centuries: it was analyzed how historical events, cultural trends, and literary movements affected the spoken and written language in Spain at the time, and how these influences were reflected in the observed linguistic changes. In conclusion, this study offers a comprehensive and detailed view of the historical phonetics and phonology of Spanish during the 16th and 17th centuries and contributes to the knowledge of the linguistic evolution of Spanish and its relationship with the historical and cultural context in which it developed
