Abstract

This thesis is composed by 3 studies. First, a systematic review was carried out on the effects of physical exercise on the main variables physical-functional capacity and cognitive performance, in older people with Alzheimer's. Evidence was found that supported the practice of physical exercise for the improvement of all the variables observed. Secondly, an observational study was carried out to determine risk or protective factors in Alzheimers. Age, Type II Diabetes, frequency of falls and drugs intake were identified as risk factors; while the protective factors identified were being physically active and study level. Finally, a randomized clinical trial was conducted to analyze the effect of strength exercise on the risk of falls in older people with Alzheimer's. The results determined resistance exercise is an effective tool to reduce the risk of falls and produce improvements in other variables, except ADLs.
