Resumen

A wide variety of disorders related to renal function, including cognitive problems have been observed in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The main objective of this thesis is to study the neuropsychological performance in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatment, as well as the acute effects of hemodialysis treatment on performance, and its association with clinical factors. These aims were addressed by conducting three studies whose findings showed a worse cognitive and executive performance in hemodialysis patients compared to peritoneal dialysis patients, and of these compared to healthy controls. In addition, small pre-post hemodialysis differences were observed. The observed associations of neuropsychological performance with clinical factors show the positive influence of peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation, and an adequate nutritional status on cognitive and executive performance.
