Abstract

The objective of this work is to use different precursors (clays, metallurgical slag, fly ash and biomass ash) for the manufacture of alkali activated cements using potassium silicate and potassium hydroxide as alkaline activator. The optimal activation conditions have been determined for each precursor. Subsequently, the influence of the incorporation of different proportions of waste has been studied to improve technological properties developed. In order to improve ductility and resistance to bending, composites were manufactured adding olive fibres as reinforcing material, studying different alkali treatments to optimize matrix-fibre adhesion. Finally, olive pomace fly ash was used as an alternative activator, in the search of cements with almost zero carbon footprint, made with 100 wt. % waste and/or industrial by-products. The results show the possibility of obtaining cementitious materials with technological properties that vary depending on the precursor or precursors used, which can be used for structural or masonry construction.
