Abstract

The aim of this Doctoral Thesis has been the study of the cognitive, emotional and psychophysiological mechanisms involved in body dissatisfaction and in the treatment based on mirror exposition techniques It has been provided the following empirical evidence: The exposition to images of thin models may be harmful for the women to whom these advertisements are aimed at, in particular those who are previously concerned about their self image. The emotions and negative cognitions caused by mirror exposition in body dissatisfaction women are not associated to the creation of physiological components characteristic of the emotion, suggesting a style of passive-inhibited confrontation. The treatment of body dissatisfaction with the therapy of mirror exposition is effective using the pure exposition technique or the neutral description but less sessions are required for the reduction of the symptoms using the pure exposition technique.
