Abstract
This text analyzes the repercussions of applying life history in teaching and learning the subject of History of the structure and social movements in Contemporary Spain for the Social Work degree. Traditionally, University studies were based on a closed collection of knowledge transmitted to the student. However, the current teaching models focused on students’ learning and skill development. The methodology used is based on telling life stories from an interview with a family member. The results obtained show that students feel themselves as actors in their own learning process, in addition to using skills that the social worker will need in his or her future professional activity. In conclusion, this activity demonstrates how teaching history must create a critical conscience in the student, with an understanding of historic knowledge as something affecting her or him, at the same time as it provides a basis for reaching identification with the profession.
