Abstract

Introduction. Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a spinal pathology characterized by a three-dimensional deformity of unknown etiology. Its most common form is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Its treatment is based on corrective exercise (CE), bracing or surgery. Objectives. To analyze the efficacy of CE for the improvement of curvature and quality of life (QOL) in AIS. To establish the possible relationship between alterations of the vestibular and stomatognathic systems and IS. Methodology and results. Three studies were designed: - Corrective exercise-based treatment for AIS: Systematic review and meta-analysis. - Vestibular morphological alterations in AIS: A systematic review of observational studies. - Relationship between stomatognathic alterations and IS. A systematic review with meta-analysis of observational studies. Conclusions. CE is effective in improving the curve and QOL. Asymmetries in the vestibular and stomatognathic systems may occur in scoliosis.
