Abstract

This Doctoral Thesis delves into the potential of biomass gasification technology for distributed cogeneration and hydrogen production in the olive oil industry. It demonstrates the technical feasibility of gasifying exhausted olive pomace pellets in a downdraft gasifier for combined power, heat and biochar production. The development of a hybrid intelligent model enables reliable prediction of the hydrogen concentration in producer gas. An integrated gasification plant is proposed as cost-effective option for renewable power generation and waste management. The incorporation of biomass gasification technology in the olive oil supply chain reduces the environmental impact and promotes sustainability. The proof-of-concept for decentralized high-purity green hydrogen production showcases the advantages of hybridizing biomass gasification with alkaline water electrolysis. Overall, this research work provides valuable insights into the technical, economic, and environmental benefits of gasification technology, highlighting its potential for transforming waste management practices and driving renewable energy production in the olive oil industry.
