Abstract

The use of Raman microspectroscopy in the field of study of archaeological material is becoming more and more relevant. The improvement developed in the Raman equipment in the last few years have lead to the overcoming of some of this technique’s limitations, as a result of which it has become a highly useful archaeological tool. The sites researched for this paper lie in Andalusia and show two contexts which have a highly symbolic and ritual meaning. The former, Convento 2 (Montemayor, Córdoba), is a recent finding that consists in a quadrangular structure with a flight of stairs up to the entrance and a well in the centre. It dates back to the period of formation of the Iberian Culture (VIth century b.C.). The latter is the cemetery of Tutugi (Galera, Granada), an example of the middle of the Iberian period (IVth century b.C.). The analysis of both sites focused on various coverings and pigments of the outer walls of the settlement Convento 2 and of the inner walls of the tumulus of the cemetery of Tutugi. The samples were analysed with XRD and MRS. Joint use of these techniques made it possible to identify the materials used, namely iron ore, coal, plaster and calcite.
