Abstract

The wall fountain in the Alhambra known as «El pilar de Carlos V» constitutes a landmark in the monumental itinerary that, from the Puerta de las Granadas, culminates in the emperor’s palace. The iconographical programmes displayed along this via triumphalis construct a classicist image of sovereignty through subject matter gathered from history, mythology and allegory, as illustrated by the figuration of the four tondos carved into the fountain’s retaining wall. Historiography has come to come to consider this programme inalienable from its chronology and authorship. However, the identification of the relief representing Alexander accompanied by the inscription Non sufficit orbis, bearing an emblem of Felipe II, allows us to determine that this iconographic intervention was carried out after his reign and address the semantical study of the image in question from the political propaganda displayed around this sovereign.
