Abstract
We briefly outline the historical process of primary school teacher training at the so-called "escuelas normales" beginning with the stage previous to their creation. The successive training plans over the 150-year period the "normales" have existed are reported, as well as a quick sketch on the professional training of secondary school teachers, finishing with the outline on the most recent precedents. Lastly, focussing on the short history of investigation in teacher training and its future prospects some trends and problems are reported taking into account the patterns that have been accorded to them.
