Abstract

Objective To determine the physiotherapy procedures that are effective in the treatment of subjects with irritable bowel syndrome. Materials and methods A systematic review was conducted in the PubMed, WOS, PEDro, Cochrane and Scopus databases, using the keywords «Irritable bowel syndrome» and «physical therapy». Only randomized clinical trials published in the last 10 years were selected. The PEDro scale was used to evaluate the methodological quality. Results A total of 2036 articles were found, of which seven met all inclusion and exclusion criteria. These studies were classified into three groups according to the type of intervention applied: therapeutic exercise, osteopathy, and transcutaneous interferential electrical stimulation. The study variables included were severity of the syndrome, pain intensity, quality of life, fatigue, stool shape, anxiety, and depression. The subjects involved were diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome between the ages of 30 and 50. Most of the articles had a short treatment duration (12 weeks). Conclusion This systematic review found benefits from different physiotherapy procedures as treatment in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome. Improvements in symptoms and quality of life were obtained when applying any of the interventions, highlighting the results of therapeutic exercise. Positive results were also found against anxiety, depression, and fatigue, although less significant.
