Abstract

The objective of this work is to present the story of a Moriscowoman who appears in an Arabic historical novel titled Al-mūrīskī l-akhīr (TheLast Moorish) and written in 2014 by the Egyptian author Ṣubḥī Mūsà. Framedand well-founded in historical reality, the novel presents an episode whoseprotagonist, Aicha, is faced with a strong moral dilemma to save her husband:whether or not to give in to the sexual pretensions of the priest who can free herimprisoned and convicted husband. of the Inquisition. But her surrenderrepresents a serious attack on the honor and dignity of herself and her family.Therefore, her life is already unbearable with so much pain and she commitssuicide. The tragedy of this woman, Aicha, symbolizes the reality of Moriscotragedy: rather death than a life stripped of honor and the supreme sacrifice fordignity.
