Abstract

Ableism is an ideology that perpetuates the idea that disability is inherently negative and produces discriminatory action towards those who do not conform to the commonly accepted “ideal” stereotype of a person. As an expression of this are the enabling micro-aggressions which are a type of violence, more or less overt and accompanied by subtle actions against people with disabilities. The aim of this study is to find out about the micro-aggressions experienced by students with disabilities at the universities of Granada and Jaén, both within their respective institutions and in the development of their daily activities. Using a quantitative approach, we designed a descriptive observational study and collected data by means of a survey. The main results have been that the determining factor for experiencing these micro-aggressions is the “minimisation of the disability”, the most relevant variables are the visibility of the disability, the use of technical and/or human support, the origin and type of disability and the most frequent manifestations are again those related to the “minimisation of the disability”. We conclude that the majority of the sample support enabling micro-aggressions depending on the visibility of their disability.
