Abstract

This study presents an experimental methodology to analyze the displacement and strain fields at the near crack-tip region using a 3D-DIC system based on two cameras in a stereoscopic setup with a stereoscopic microscope. The optical system uses a special calibration model with a distortion correction module to overcome problems associated with obtaining 3D measurements under high magnification. The experimental data provided by the 3D-DIC analysis is useful to extract important information from the near crack-tip region which plays an extremely important role in the fatigue crack propagation under cyclic loading. The experimental data obtained with this methodology make it also possible to analyze the effects of nonlinear phenomena occurring surrounding the crack tip region. In addition, it can contribute to understanding the issues surrounding the real forces that drive the fatigue crack growth process.
