Abstract
During the last decades there have been many studies on the use of fibres for reinforcing gypsum or cement mortar matrices, these studies use fibres of different materials, but few of them use polymer fibres. The polymer fibres can increase the ductility of the mix providing an improved strength against tensile and bending forces. Three failure mechanisms are usually identified in fibre-reinforced materials: i) matrix failure, ii) fibre failure and iii) fibre-matrix interface failure. This study analyzes the adhesion of the interface between polymers and matrices of gypsum and cement mortar, using polymer fibres obtained with plastic packaging, usually employed in food industry, with the aim of reusing waste that is produced in large quantities and reducing its disposal in the evironment. This seeks to verify the feasibility of using these fibres as reinforcement to mechanically strengthen gypsum and cement mortar matrices under tensile forces. Gypsum and cement mortar specimens will be tested with PET fibres embedded at different depths and with different geometries, through pull-out tests monitored with a digital image correlation. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of polymer adhesion in gypsum and cement mortar matrices.
