Abstract

Introduction: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common illness that severely limits psychosocial functioning and decreases quality of life. Clinical diagnosis involves clinical interview conducted by mental health specialists. Methods: In this thesis we conduct an analysis of theoretical frameworks, questionnaire contents and diagnoses using structured interviews. Results: The results showed substantial differences in diagnoses both in symptom assessment with questionnaires and in the prevalence of symptoms and diagnoses in the general population when using structured interviews. Conclusions: The method used to assess depression is an important consideration for stablishing a diagnosis. A focus on full symptom analyses can help refine our understanding of MDD. The use and assessment of prevalence and changes in symptom adherence could be the first step.
