Resumen

En la historia del pensamiento sobre administración de organizaciones hay muchos autores destacados, pero son pocos los que han aunado una formación académica multidisciplinar continuada expuestos a nuevas corrientes de pensamiento, una experiencia práctica en puestos ejecutivos en grandes empresas, y una experiencia de participación en actividades públicas en beneficio de la comunidad. Chester Barnard emerge en este grupo como un teórico-práctico del management que, frente a las aportaciones de la teoría clásica, se adelanta a tiempo y propone considerar las empresas como sistemas sociales cooperativos, definiendo el papel que deben desempeñar los directivos para conseguir la eficacia y eficiencia de la organización. En este trabajo nos aproximamos a las posibles influencias históricas, personales e intelectuales que pudieron ayudarle a configurar su pensamiento, y que le convirtieron desde 1938 en un autor de lectura obligada para los teóricos y los prácticos del management, ya que muchas de sus ideas siguen siendo válidas hoy día
