Resumen

The European Portfolio has been extensively and usefully employed for general language teaching and assessment. However, this paper aims to shed light on its great utility in connection to another aspect of paramount importance in language learning: the acquisition of intercultural competence. To this end, it presents the results yielded in the implementation of a course on intercultural competence for professional mobility within the field of Tourism recently offered at the University of Jaén. It thus begins by describing the general features of the European Language Portfolio and by examining the secondary role which intercultural communicative competence is awarded within it, subsequently stressing the potential of the Portfolio as a tool for intercultural teaching by exemplifying how it has been employed in this sense within the development of the course in question. Special emphasis is laid on the tremendous value which the European Portfolio has had in the construction and implementation of its initial sessions.
