Resumen

The increase in age has been associated with the increase in chronic non-communicable diseases. The main hypothesis of this Doctoral Thesis is based on the premise that sexual functioning and behavior is altered in middle-aged and older women due to both physiological changes and psychosocial factors. Two systematic reviews, a systematic review of qualitative studies, and a systematic review of quantitative studies with meta-analysis have been carried out between the years 2020 and 2022. The results of this Doctoral Thesis show how middle-aged and older women detect a set of beliefs and socially assigned age attributes that have limiting effects on their behavioral expressions of sexuality. The findings demonstrated a greater impact of the fibromyalgia condition on female sexual function (SMD = 1.72; 95% CI, 1.18–2.26; p < 0.001), compared with healthy women.
