Abstract

This randomised controlled trial studied the effect of Abdominal Hypopressive Training (AHT) on: the impact of pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFD) with the PFD1-20 and PFIQ-7 questionnaires, perineal muscle function with the modified Oxford scale, activity of deep trunk muscles through the thickness of transverse abdominal muscle with ultrasound, postural control (PC) across stabilometric measures, ventilatory capacity (VC) estimated with spirometry and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) with the SF-12 questionnaire, in 126 women with PFD. The participants were randomised into an experimental group that received two 30-minute sessions of AHT per week for 8 weeks and a control group that not received treatment. The findings determined that after 8 weeks of AHT in women with PFD: significantly decreased the impact of symptoms of PSD, improved perineal and deep abdominal function, provided benefits for PC and VC. However, there was not improvement in HRQoL.
