The present work departs from defining the issue of orchestration teaching and learning. The most relevant pedagogical literature (dated from 1772 through 2018) in this domain was revisited, and an exploratory study was conducted. Both sources lead to convergent results. Orchestration learning heavily relied on declarative knowledge of individual instruments' idioms and required memorizing the highest number of instrumental combinations considered successful by reference composers throughout history. Consequently, orchestration historically has relied on pattern identification and implementation of the aforementioned combinations. Here, we aimed to propose a set of strategic rules as a pedagogical tool to manage multiple timbres. Its feasibility has been shown in the atonal context (through a composition whose architecture was based on timbre) and tonal context (an educational intervention was developed for this aim). The proposed tool has proved robust and has presented a high degree of controllability in both contexts.
