Resumen
Due to the increase of wind energy penetration into electrical grid, installing wind farms faces many challenges. Continuity of wind farms connection to grid or at least reconnection after clearance of grid faults is considered most important one. However, the Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices can be used as auxiliary equipment to solve such challenges. This paper studies the impact of Static Var Compensator (SVC) on performance of three different types of wind farms during grid faults. The first wind farm is based on squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG); the second wind farm is based on doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) and last wind farm is hybrid wind farm (HWF) that based on a combination between an equal numbers of SCIG and DFIG. The HWF is developed to collect the main benefits of SCIG and DFIG. Where, SCIG is considered cheaper than DFIG, while, DFIG is considered expensive than SCIG. However, the developed HWF with SVC shows good performance during grid faults. All test cases are carried out using MATLAB SIMULINK program.
