Abstract

On the bicentenary of his birth, the cadastral project designed and implemented by Francisco Coello, Spain's most famous geographer, is presented. A generator of geo-referenced information, Coello conceived the Cadastre as a plural, multi-purpose register, essential in a society and for an Administration that needed to know the territory in its physical, legal and economic aspects, in order to design a government project that would promote a correct governance. This native of Jaén set out his proposals in the Reglamento General de Operaciones Topográfico-Catastrales, some of which took a century and a half to be definitively implemented, which makes the document fully up to date and acknowledges its promoter as a great cadastral surveyor of the 21st century.
