Abstract

The CPM paradigm (Conditioned Pain Modulation) is an endogenous pain inhibition/modulation system in humans. The mechanism of action can be summarized as “pain inhibits pain”. There are questions about what are the optimal parameters for its activation. This doctoral thesis analyzes 4 CPM test paradigms and the possible influencing factors in the CPM mechanism. The PSQ (Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire) is a self-perceived measure of pain sensitivity. It consists of 17 items that present imaginary painful situations of daily life. Developed in 2009 and validated in more than 8 languages, it offers a simple and economical alternative to quantitative sensory pain tests. This thesis carries out the adaptation and validation of this questionnaire to Spanish language and it studies its psychometric properties too. CPM and PSQ are presented as simple, fast and economic tools that could complement the complex evaluation of chronic pain.
