Abstract

The mass media can have a positive and/or negative impact on today's society. Therefore, the present study aims to establish the association of the use of sports media and the different channels of diffusion in relation to psychological well-being, socio-cultural attitudes towards appearance and physical-healthy aspects in the population. A non-experimental (ex post facto), descriptive, comparative, correlational and cross-sectional design is presented. The sample was composed of a total of 634 participants, representing 55.5% (n = 352) of the female gender and 44.5% (n = 282) of the male gender and with an age range between 18 and 66 years (35.18 ± 9.68). An Ad-Hoc questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic, physical-sports and sports media related aspects, as well as the questionnaire on sociocultural attitudes towards appearance that evaluates social pressure towards physical appearance, the psychological well-being scale and the Mediterranean diet quality index. The results and main conclusions of the study are that the pressure exerted by the media negatively affects psychological well-being, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, physical activity practice and the use of sports media. Media pressure is related to the need to obtain a thin and athletic complexion, as well as associated with other social pressures such as family and peer group. However, the use of sport-oriented media is associated with improved psychological well-being, increased physical activity and a Mediterranean diet, as well as an athletic complexion.
