Resumo

A number of studies have found that the adolescent-to-parent violence (APV) is related to a history of domestic violence within the family setting. The current paper aimed to explore the APV from the intergenerational transmission of violence approach, through the analysis of some family variables, concretely: the relationship between the parents, a history of domestic violence within the family, and in that case, who exerted violence. With this goal, a total of 1046 of young offenders’ legal files from the Service of Juvenile Justice of Jaén (Spain) corresponding to the period from 2001 to 2010 were analysed. The final sample (n = 654) was clustered into two groups according to the type of offense committed (parent abuse/ other offenses). Results revealed a higher percentage of conflictive relationships between parents together with histories of domestic violence within the family in the parent-abuse group when comparing to the other offenses group. Interparental violence (father to mother) was the most frequent type of domestic violence. Results are discussed from the intergenerational transmission of violence approach.
