Abstract

Objective: Research on child to parent violence has increased in recent years, wakeningan interest in the study of parenting styles in order to improve the understanding of childto parent violence. However, research on parenting style in child-to-parent violence hasanalysed this phenomenon with samples of adolescents, and very few with samples ofparents. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between dimensions’parenting style and child-to-parent violence, as well as to compare the dimensions’parenting style used by parents who were victims of child-to-parent violence with thosewho had not suffered this type of violence. Method: The sample included 485 fathers andmothers of adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years old. The Child-to-Parent ViolenceQuestionnaire (CPV-Q-P), Warmth Scale (WS) and the Rules/Demands Scale (RDS), allin the parents’ version, were administered. Results: The results show that parenting stylebased on criticism and rejection, as well as an indulgent and rigid manner of setting rulesare associated with more child-to-parent violence behaviors. On the other hand, parentswho were victims of child-to-parent violence show higher scores in the dimensions’criticism-rejection and indulgent and rigid manner, compared to those parents who hadnot suffered child to parent violence, with some differences between fathers and mothers. Conclusions: The importance of working on parenting practices with parents, includingaffection, communication and reasonable control of rules, is highlighted for futureprograms of prevention and intervention of child to parent violence.
