Resumo

Abstract: Implementation features and effects of a school-based health promotion program named ¿Forma Joven¿ have been evaluated on attitudes and behaviors on nutrition, physical activity, sexuality, drugs, and road safety of fourth-grade-high-school students (equivalent to 10th in US) in Seville, Spain. The ¿Forma Joven¿ Program has been developed in Andalusia and has points of multidisciplinary-care at high schools. An evaluative design with qualitative and quantitative methods was chosen. To evaluate the program impact we carried out a quasi-experimental study, with pre-test and post-test, between the beginning and end of the academic year (2011-2012). 322 students were enrolled, 161 in an experimental group and 161 in the control group, who were randomly selected. Validated instruments were used and 2X2 tables and factorial ANOVA for mixed designs (p<.05) were calculated, effect size was also calculated. Implementation features have been portrayed and compared on both kinds of high schools, those which implemented ¿Forma Joven¿ program and those which did not implement ¿Forma Joven¿ from data collected on case study qualitative design. 24 semi-structured interviews to high school counselors and nurses were carried out. Effects and counter-effects of low magnitude have been found that are not conclusive. These results may be related to similarity of health promotion activities at both kinds of high schools. In addition, weaknesses in relation to the organization, fidelity, professional training, resources, and a low response from students, may have influenced low effects of ¿Forma Joven¿ program. Strengths have also been found at high schools which have implemented ¿Forma Joven¿ program, and professionals have identified positive and negative aspects, as well as improvement proposals. The results have been discussed with previous studies, and may be useful for future investigations on intervention and evaluation of programs of health promotion in adolescents.
