Abstract

Fishing has been practiced since the origins of mankind, but, paradoxically,there are few social researches about this activity. From thetheoretical position offered by territorial studies, this investigation analysesthe evolution of the vessels, as productive forces, during the 20thcentury in the northwest of Yucatan (Mexico). Vessels are proved to havebeen transformed at the pace that the fishing obtained socioeconomicand political relevance. Moreover, it is underlined that the mentionedinstruments are shapers of the territory, becoming heritage goods of theYucatec seafaring culture.
