Abstract

This text aims to reveal the role of women as protagonists in the construction of citizenship in the last years of Francoism and the beginnings of democracy. The province of Jaén has been taken as the geographical area for this purpose. Women’s traditional role of assuring family survival led them to fight for their husbands’ employment, to complain and claim school places for their children along with medical and generally better services, highlighting their group function in isolation, but also their work in the neighbourhoods and neighbourhood associations.
