Abstract

The so-called Blue Marls or Clays constitute a marine formation from the Upper Miocene in the Guadalquivir Basin, to which serious geotechnical problems, including collapses or deep landslides, are associated. The relationship between the geotechnical characteristics of these marls and their mineralogy and fabric has been studied in the low and middle Guadal- quivir (Tsige and González de Vallejo, 1996; Vázquez Boza, 2014), where the formation reaches a large development and uniformity. In the Upper Guadalquivir, materials from Upper Miocene, although less uniform, are also involved in main geotechnical problems that affect infrastructures and buildings, including increased erosion by gullies. In this communication, we analyze which levels of the Upper Miocene from the Alto Guadalquivir are responsible for the geotechnical problems, based on several distributed type sections. We also analyze the mineralogy and microscopic fabric that makes them so susceptible. In this way, it we have estimated the geological conditions of some of the main incidents in the province of Jaén. This knowledge can be integrated into the land management plans.
