Résumé
Objective: To demonstrate the preventive effects of ecological olive oil on nipple-cracking and nipple-pain during breastfeeding. Methods: Controlled clinical trial randomized, with an intervention group (ecological olive oil) and a control group. A sample of 124 women, ≥18 years, which gave full term birth, initiated breastfeeding and signed the informed consent. Excluded women with hospitalized newborns, previous injuries or use nipple’s products. Data about nipple-cracking (absence or presence) and pain (validated numerical scale) were gathered for one month. Analyses through contingency tables, Chi-square and Student’s t-test. Cohen’s d and Wald statistics were used to estimate the clinical impact. Statistical software SPSSv21, significance level α=.05. Results: The frequency of nipple-cracking was 38% one week and 41% during the first month. The primiparous of the intervention group showed less cracking than those of the control group (p<.05). Conclusion: Ecological olive oil is more effective than human milk on nipple-cracking in primiparous women.
