Resumo

This paper intends to stimulate the debate about STEM education, paying special attention to the critic voices to this approach and the analysis of the research evidence provided by the specialized literature. In response to some of the criticism, a theoretical framework is presented, drawing on the specialized literature and the available evidence to discuss the appropriateness and feasibility of STEM education. Finally, the discussion is enriched from the analysis of current challenges and directions in science education, presenting the STEM approach as an opportunity to re-think the intended learning goals and the best procedures to achieve them.
