Abstract

As communicative contexts emerged due to the introduction of new technologies into our society, different types of discourse have at the same time been developed and adapted to these situations. Users of a certain language have come to some kind of “agreement” in order to establish a linguistic style in SMS, e-mail, chat rooms, online comments or social networks. Regarding to social networks, there has been a lot of debate about the colloquiality the language may adopt, which is a logical phenomenon if we consider the immediate nature this type of media acquired. The speaker recognises this type of discourse, and it helps him to replace the information he or she would have received otherwise in a face to face conversation. As a result, a colloquial syntax has been developed in these settings, which is full of resources that are common in orality. Through analysis of the suspended conditionals in Twitter, we intend to prove how social networks perfectly reflect the characteristics of this syntax, advocating in this way the fact that their performances may be used as corpus in future linguistic researches.
