Abstract

Cervantes’ literature shows numerous passages related to hygiene and filth. For instance, in the Novelas ejemplares it is possible to find characters, objects and places thoroughly described, all of which cause the “effect of reality” studied by Roland Barthes. In this paper I analyze several texts that can be considered relevant in order to understand Cervantes’ creation of the modern novel. Additionally, paintings of Caravaggio and Murillo are shown, since they are also connected to this new way of comprehending dirt.
