Resum

As a social process, reading is used to establish and maintain social relationships among people. Reading, and literacy in general, are part of the processes of cultural transmissions, enculturation, and socialization. A social view on reading posits that reading performs a socializing function, it enculturates readers and at the same time, texts are social and cultural artifacts which reflect group values and norms. Texts are manifestations of cultures. These manifestations imply socially acquired frames of reference, value systems, sociopolitical history of the writer and idiosincratic knoledges and beliefs. Texts are viewed as cultural artifacts which become fluid and open to multiple interpretations. On the other hand, reading is part of the process of enculturation. It is recognized as a necessary part of learning. Language is alive and their users may have a big variety of purposes for reading, this fact can be used by teachers to increase motivation. Active promotion of reading is needed if teachers want to establish the reading habit. Students follow the example of people they respect consecuently, it is important that teachers and parents demonstrate they value reading.
