Abstract

This study examined the forgiveness attitude of battered women. The effect of this attitude on the frequency of psychosomatic symptoms was also evaluated. The study involved 34 women, 17 battered women and 17 women with similar characteristics to the previous ones who had not experienced this type of violence. The results showed that the first ones presented lower attitudes to forgive themselves and the situation comparing with the other participants. Moreover, a significant effect of the level and type of forgiveness on psychosomatic illnesses was found: the difficulties to forgive, especially to themselves, were associated with higher frequencies in the appearance of some psychosomatic symptoms.
