Abstract

From the life stories of civil guards, the Civil Guard institution has been studied since the convergence of different social sciences during late Francisco Franco’s era and the transition to democracy. Starting with a shallow social historical framing, it analyses the social origins of troop members, their discipline and indoctrination during the Academy phase, consisting of the work of the civil guard, the indissoluble link between work and co-litigation, the job and conditions of the day-to-day, the importance of the symbolic, in order to reach the main conclusion that Goffman's model of total institution can be largely applied to the institution of the Civil Guard, which is also a field of self-action and a specific social identity.
